Following a kiss in a love scene from my book, Love Lost and Found, my main character, Cheryl, concentrated on the soft cotton of his shirt, the light breeze of his breath ruffling her hair and his work-roughened hand gently stroking her face. Besides the actual lovers, the sensory details of settings in a love scene can enhance the romantic mood.

In any love scene you write, and especially if you decide to end your book with a couple's embrace, try to keep dialogue a part of the mix. Today's readers tend to skip over blocks of black type, and you might be surprised what your characters say (and do) to each other.

It’s been a while since I last shared some of my favorite kissing scenes in books. Those who have been following my posts know that a kissing scene conveys something to me when it’s well written, when I can feel the chemistry between the characters (you can find my previous posts here: part one, part two, part three).Authors have their own ways of writing them and it’s always interesting.

Even a beautifully written love scene jars the reader when you put it in the wrong place, making her question the characters — and stopping the book in its tracks. Place the love scenes properly — and after the proper build-up — and half your job is done, because the reader will want your characters to get together just as much as the characters themselves do.

There's only one of two reasons for a reader not wanting a love scene to take place: 1) they picked up a spicy book accidentally, or 2) the writer didn't set the stage for love scenes early or enough. If there's no tension between a couple, no exaggerated awareness, a love scene is going to shock and embarrass the reader as much as it will the characters.

To sum up, love scenes are done best when they follow no particular formula, but instead, come from the heart. Less is more. Of course, you should also keep in mind that the research is frequently much more fun than the actual writing. But take a few moments to get it down on paper, anyway.
